Numerous years ago, I took a college class called The Middle Ages with a favorite professor. I signed up for it because of my interest in history but also because of its itinerary that would take me back to my birth country of Belgium. We were required as one of our assignments for the three-week course to write a small daily journal entry about a topic related to our class topic. I procrastinated and found myself on the last evening pulling together fifteen short written pieces. I turned them in the next day hoping for the best. When I received them back a week later, I was surprised to see a red A+ written on the front page, along with a short response that included “the most interesting topics of the class” and “thoughtful and reflective writing.”
Years later, I remembered those words and decided to submit several essays to my local newspaper related to food and give them the heading, La Bonne Vie, as a nod to my Belgian upbringing and career as a baker and food maker. Since, I’ve written a column weekly, sometimes with a recipe. My intention is to take the reader along on my journey which usually requires being present to the everyday and taking the time to enjoy the small pleasures and details of life. The journey is often more interesting than the destination.
I write a weekly column and will sometimes post additional writings, recipes and thoughts during the week.
Won’t you join me?
